Alternative Music Favorite A’s

22nd June, 2009 - Posted by -

Throughout the history of alternative music thus far, there have been so many great bands.  I’m officially kicking off my A-Z favorites list.  There are way too many awesome bands and artists to fit every single one into a blog so I’ll be narrowing my list down as to not drag on forever.

Starting off with bands that begin with the letter A, I would like to note a couple of things before I begin.  First, I am not including any band that starts with “the” as I will have an entire list of “the” bands later on in the summer.  Also, my lists will always be in no particular order.  Having gotten the particulars out of the way, I am ready to begin!

1. A.F.I., short for A Fire Inside, has released beautiful songs for quite some time now.  They have been together since roughly 1991, but they didn’t become widely known and successful until around 2003.  There is hardly a day that goes by that I haven’t listened to some of their songs.  It is nearly impossible to get tired of  listening to these guys!

2. Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 by Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell.  Layne had a completely unique and recognizable voice that just made their music so incredible.  After Layne’s death in 2002, they were inactive until 2005 when they reunited with a new lead singer.

3. Audioslave was a band who ran from 2001-2007.  Chris Cornell and the instrumental part of Rage Against the Machine formed the band.  People were not sure what they were going to get with these guys at first, but when their first album came out they were pleasantly surprised.  They disbanded in 2007, but during their time together they made some sweet music.

4. A Perfect Circle is what some people refer to as a “super” group.  There have been more than a few people interchanged in this group, all of them having had fame from other bands.  They have been inactive for a few years, but rumors are going around that they may be working on something soon.  Regardless of all the revolving door changes with the crew that happen, Maynard,(who is the front man for Tool) is the consistent vocals for them.

5. Angels & Airwaves is fronted by the ever popular Tom DeLonge.  This band is also a mix of people from previous groups that fared well.  Some say they sound a bit much like Blink-182, minus the punk.  I think they’ve got some cool tunes, and it’s nice to hear that the band isn’t breaking up just because of Blink’s reunion.

6. Atreyu is more of an alternative metal band bordering hardcore metal depending on what song you’re listening to.  Earlier on they were way more metalcore than they are now, but they have always sounded amazing.  How can you not love a band who is named after a character from The Neverending Story?  They weren’t always named Atreyu though, at first they were named Retribution.

That’s it for the A-list, B-list incoming soon!
